How Bytelogic built a full inventory and retail management platform from scratch, a real alternative to category leaders like Unleashed Software, then layered a role-aware GPT-4o AI system on top of it.
Building a category competitor from zero
ROAR is an Australian retail and inventory management platform, built by Bytelogic from the ground up for founder Steve Riley Huntsman as a full alternative to established players like Unleashed Software, covering inventory, purchasing, sales, and multi-location stock control, with POS and accounting built in natively rather than bolted on.
Bytelogic didn't inherit an existing system; we built the core engine, the integrations, and once that foundation was solid, the AI layer on top of it.
Build the core, then make it intelligent
- Build a full inventory and retail management system from scratch, competitive with established category leaders
- Support multiple business roles (staff, managers, master admin) with different data visibility and control
- Integrate natively with POS (Lightspeed) and accounting (Xero), not through third-party connectors
- Architect for multi-tenant SaaS expansion from day one, so the platform could serve many organisations from one codebase

Two builds, one platform
Bytelogic delivered ROAR in two connected builds: first the core inventory and retail management system, then once that foundation was proven, a GPT-4o powered AI Intelligence Layer on top of it.

An active, healthy, growing partnership
18+ months in, the relationship remains active and healthy. The core ROAR platform is complete and in daily use, the AI Intelligence Layer Phase 1 has been delivered, an Annual Maintenance Contract is signed and in effect, and a Phase 2 AI contract has been signed to extend the platform's intelligence further.
